Now as a club we have had some nice kits and we have had some not so nice kits. I also find it amazing the amount of memories that we attach to certain kits, be them good or bad simply with a glimpse at an old kit. Long forgotten games and moments are brought to the forefront of our minds as if they were just yesterday.
So, I thought with the help from some other fans of the Gills we should take a look at each of our favourite kits and how they came to be. So sit back and get ready to reminisce, I am sure there will be some that will bring back some great memories. Enjoy!

Now my choice is the 2007-2009 kit, there are so many good memories that come to mind when I see this kit. The play-off final being the stand out one of course, that Simeon Jackson celebration is long etched in my mind. Alongside that is the home match against Aston Villa where, if it wasnt for Ashley Young and his slippery feet we might have sneaked an upset that day. The absolute thunderbolt of a finish from Simeon after turning Knight and leaving him for dust was also an amazing feeling, especially with a packed out 10,000+ Priestfield! Aside from the memories I just think it is a nice simple kit using the light blue that I see as our Gillingham blue.

My choice is the 1999/00 away shirt. It’s not necessarily my favourite design. Although it is simplistic and smart, it’s not exactly the ‘95/’96 stripes or classic nineties ‘90/’91 (my favourite as a kid), however it is obviously one of the most important and iconic as it’s a reminder of my greatest day as a Gillingham fan. Just looking at this shirt takes me back to Wembley 2000 and Andy Thomson’s late headed winner that took the Gills to the second tier of English football for the first time in our entire history. In the past year, this shirt has taken even more significance in my life when I was fortunate to have been given Gills Legend Steve Butler’s shirt (the actual shirt he scored the all-important equaliser in) from that match, signed! I am honoured to own such an important piece of Gillingham history and it is most definitely my most prized possession!

(Option 1) Based purely on what it meant to both the football club and myself as a fan, I had to pick this one. Having watched us heartbreakingly lose on penalties at Wembley the year before, and fearing that history was repeating itself, nothing will ever beat that feeling of elation and relief when Andy Thomson headed in Ty Gooden’s cross to send us to the promised land of the second tier.
(Option 2) One of my favourites from my collection as it was donated to me by one of my favourite players from when I first started supporting the club. We were really struggling for a large portion of his early Gills career, but Neil Smith epitomised everything good that we stand for. Honest, hardworking, aggressive and willing to put his body on the line, a mid 90s warrior and a top bloke to boot.

The 1993-94 was not a vintage season! So it would have to be the 2-1 win at Carlisle ending our run of 29 away League games without a win! Baker was sent off after 13 mins, Day saved Green’s penalty having somehow not been sent off, Flanagan was sent to the stands before Nicky Forster ran through to score. United equalised with 8 mins to go but Forster ran through again on 84 to win it for us. Tears of joy in the away end from 300 Gills fans! Also, I am a traditionalist at heart, so prefer white socks, white shorts and a simple blue shirt, but the white and black shoulders were a lovely twist. Simple but effective and unusual at the time.
