Welcome everyone, it has been a while since a club has featured in full on the website and I think it is well overdue that changes! So here we are about to head through the turnstile at a club who are seeing great success both on and off the pitch, situated in Devon this is a football team you will want to know about!
So lets head on through as we discover Exmouth Town FC!
A brief history of the club.
Exmouth Town Football Club was founded in 1933, originally playing on the Maer Cricket Field before settling at their current Southern Road ground in 1964. After achieving sustained success in the Devon and Exeter League, the club joined the Western League in 1973. Their rise was swift: promoted to the Premier Division in 1981–82, they went on to win league titles in 1983–84 and 1985–86, alongside further honours including the League Cup (1989–90), two Premier Division runner-up finishes, and two Sportsman Trophies.
Cup competitions also brought memorable moments. Exmouth won the Devon St Luke’s Bowl three times, the Devon Senior Cup, and the Devon Premier Cup twice. Their most notable cup run came in 1984–85 when they reached the FA Vase semi-finals, narrowly losing to Fleetwood Town over two legs in front of more than 5,000 spectators. During this successful period, the club installed floodlights and welcomed several Football League sides, recording a record home attendance of 2,395 against Liverpool in July 1987.

The 1990s proved tougher. Relegated after the 1993–94 season, Exmouth returned to the Premier Division in 2003–04 but withdrew from the Western League in 2005. The club reformed as Exmouth Town (2006) AFC, earning promotion into the South West Peninsula League’s Division One (East) and eventually winning the division in 2012–13. Further strong campaigns followed, including cup finals, a fifth-place league finish in 2016–17, and promotion back to the Western League Premier Division in 2019.
The club continued to impress with FA Cup victories in 2019–20 before the pandemic halted progress while they sat fifth. Covid disruption again cut short the 2020–21 season, though Exmouth were third at its conclusion. In 2021–22, under Kevin Hill and Andy Rawlings, the team enjoyed one of the finest seasons in its history, finishing runners-up to Tavistock and securing promotion to the Southern League for the first time.

Stadium Shop
Check out that branded tablecloth!
Fans can purchase all sorts of goods inside the stadium with a visit to the club shop which is run and manned by the Supporters club ( Muff Town Casuals). There is a multitude of items on sale and you can be sure to find something worthy of a few of your pennies.

Itssssss pin badge corner and Exmouth Town have two to choose from, one with gold trimming (slightly larger) and the other smaller with a silver trim. Both are really smart and the choice means you can decide on what one suits your preference the most. My personal choice i think is the smaller silver version but each to their own.

Price – £5
(£4.50 for supporter members)
Special Mention – Mufftown Casuals

Now I know there are supporter groups for most clubs up and down the country but this one caught my eye for their passion and who are extremely well organised with their own website to rival some actual football clubs!
The group arrange away day travel and even support the club with small/medium sized projects through the funding they raise from members and merchandise sales. I am genuinely impressed and think everyone needs a supporters group like the ‘Mufftown Casuals’.
Where does the name come from? A number of years ago when the supporters got organised , Exmouth was always described by people visiting for the day as going down to the muff ! ( Exmouth ) , so it was adopted as Mtc Muff town casuals .

Above is a photo of the turnstile block which the supporters built during Covid , the two turnstiles were bought from Vauxhall Motors and were originally from the Anfield Road End at Anfield . In the photo is left Simon Bull, a supporter who passed away last season alongside Former Chairman Stuart Shaw .

Now, on to the most important part of the whole article, the food and drink!
Lets take a peek…
Drinks
One of the main areas of any football ground….the bar!
Ignore the tree…this is not a permanent feature don’t worry, you wont be greeted by a club that celebrates Christmas all year round.
What they do offer though is a large bar area where you can enjoy a drink of any description before, during and after the game with an ample amount of seats on offer for you to shelter from the weather (of which seems to be particularly brutal at the moment).

Food
Chips x Live football is a winning combination which should not ever be tampered with!
So I am pleased to say you can head outside to the refreshment shack to grab them among an array of other food items to satisfy your food cravings. Plus in nicer weather there is a great expanse of benches to choose from to sit, enjoy your food and drink and start the day right before the main event of the football kicks off and also sit down afterwards for a post-game catch up with friends and a drink to either celebrate the win or drown your sorrows!

The Fab 4 – League Tables
As we know the Fab 4 is the pinnacle of every team’s season – forget promotion and trophies! This is where everyone wants to come out on top. Well maybe not, but its certainly important to people like me who enjoy some food and drink when at a match!
Lets see how Exmouth fare!

A mixed bag…2/4 entries, missing out on the Burger and Chips (£10.00) and Cider (£5.000 tables due to the costs being higher than previous clubs.
A reasonably priced beer and cup of tea means that the club can claim they offer some of their parched fans an opportunity to quench their thirst on their next trip.
Overall – Not the worst but not the top of the tree either.
Top 3 current players (as told by fan Adam Fitzgerald )

I am going with three of the players who have been here since pre-COVID days all ever presents and really epitomise what the club is all about.
Ace High – Legendary Frontman
Aaron Denny – Midfield Magician
Callum Shipton – Nicknamed Pele. Enough said!
Press Play!
A YouTube channel which provides matchday highlights for all of the clubs fans, along with some post-match interviews on some which is something not all clubs offer and allows the club to speak directly to their fanbase immediately after the game, something I am all for.

It also is where the club out their weekly podcast which is hosted by the media team volunteers at the club giving a run down of what has happened recently and also informs about what is coming up in the near future. I found this a really nice way of inviting fans in to debate and give their opinions on the recent games as well as opening up another channel for the club can use for communicating to the fanbase.
Views from the Staff

Q) What first attracted you to support the club?
I have lived in Exmouth all my life and used to go to Exeter City with my father (now passed) so always been around the town I also used to follow England home and away but fell out of love with the professional game so last 5 years only town
Q) What does a match day look like for you?
On match days I do the 50/50 half time draw starting at 13.00 finish at 15.10 then watch the match and have a few pints afterwards in the clubhouse and discuss the game home about 20.00

Q) What is your go to position to watch the game?
I like to watch from behind the goal we attack swap ends at half time it is good value at £10
Q) Would you say a match day is good value for money?
Non league football is great fun without the stone island fools of the pro game, people will applaud good football from the opposition and it’s all friendly in the clubhouse.
Q) What are your hopes for the club in the next 5 years?
In the next five years I hope town are at step 3 with a ground that looks more professional with cover on all side.
View from the fans

Q) How did you come to be a fan of the club and how long has that been now?
I’m Exmouth born and bred , but needless to say moved away from home in the early years or work . Like most in East Devon Exeter City is our local BIG club , I used to travel miles to watch them . In the early 80s Town had a huge Cup run in the vase semi final when they were knocked out over 2 legs by Fleetwood Town so we would watch the occasional game , around 13 years ago . A few of us used to to watch midweek games when there was no City games and then we just got more involved . Been watching them since .
Q) What is the best bit about following a team like Exmouth Town?
Watching Town you get between 250/350 at home games , you end up knowing most people by sight . The club match day staff are supporters and volunteers who you travel to away games with as well . Over the years you get to know the players and manager and often have a beer with them after the game.
Q) How proud are you of the club as a whole?
The club over the last 6 seasons has moved from step 6 to step 4 a remarkable achievement for the Hilly the manager and players , but also the supporters and volunteers who have enabled that to happen off the pitch with ground grading etc ! The work the supporters have done over the past 5 years has been remarkable.
Q) Where is your go to spot to watch a home game?
I used to stand in the Mel Pym on the half way line , but as the crowds have got larger ( we only use to get 50 ) we now generally stand behind the goal Town are attacking in both halves . ( It can get a little wet at the town end
Q) Any recommendations on what food to order on a matchday?
Well it’s got to be a Moores pasty !
Always nice belly liner for a Madri !
Q) Why in your opinion are more fans turning to Non-league football?
I think the appeal of Non League at the lower levels is that there’s little organisation required , no booking tickets weeks ahead , pay on the gate and not expensive . Like I said you end up knowing people at games and enjoy the company . A few of us will go and watch other local teams during the week at different levels if Town are not playing .

Q) What is so special about the club?
Since a group of us got involved and help save the club before Covid it really has a supporter feel about the place. We have an active supporters club (The MuffTown Casuals) who are at the heart of a lot of good things that happen. We also have an amazing group of volunteers who work miracles on a match day and helping with the upkeep of the ground (not the pitch though tbf
Q) What is a matchday like, what is it about it that you like so much?
Match days are a real buzz starting with the volunteers on the car park and the turnstiles. Then we have the legendary 50/50 bauys whose efforts on a £ per spectator basis will not be surpassed anywhere in the country. Players mingle and chat with spectators the cider flows with top notch grub. Whatever the score everyone has a good time with banter flowing and a few drinks after the game with both supporters and players mixing and having fun
Q) The club has seen progress on and off the pitch in recent years, how has that been as a fan?
We were probably under achieving to start with but the catalyst for change on the pitch has been our legendary manager Kevin Hill. A local lad who played over 400 professional league games in his career has led the charge. We have an amazing away support and to me personally this has been the greatest part of the journey as we have been promoted. Non league football is fantastic and nothing beats an away day
Q) Who has been exciting to watch play this year?
The team as a whole has really gelled and I will give them all the vote as exciting to watch
Q) Why should someone come along and give Exmouth Town a go?
I would tell anyone to come and watch us as a very warm welcome awaits. It draws you in and you immediately feel part of a family. Once you are here you are here forever

Q) Why did you first become a fan of the club?
I have been following Exmouth for 5 years now, they are just a lovely friendly club.
Q) What is it you love about following the team?
I love the fact that the Chairman, players and manager always talk to the fans.
Q) What does a good matchday look like for you?
Just having a great crowd in attendance
Q) How special is Non-League Football?
In my mind, grassroots football is the best
Q) Why should someone come and give Exmouth Town a go?
Exmouth Town Football Club is very friendly, dogs are welcome. The Fans are always welcome with a smile from whoever is on duty on the day!

Q) What should someone know about Exmouth town that they might not know looking in?
Exmouth Town is a community and friendly club . Welcome in new faces and help out anyone as much as they can. From the Supporters Club Chairman who is non stop busy, his son working behind the scenes to the 50/50 sellers and shop/ bar staff , they are friendly and family oriented. Welcome and catered for all disabilities . The facilities are great for the step the team play at. Certainly a club you can fall in love with .
Q) Who is one of the best players you have seen in an Exmouth Town shirt?
Having only followed them for a couple of seasons, my list is pretty short sadly..
Tor Swann was scoring regularly last season before being grabbed by Taunton.
Frankie Philips deservedly won Player Of The Season last year during his season long loan from Exeter. His performances in goal was probably worth 15 + points over the season.
Then the Torquay Utd legend.. the one who has been on telly for his goal where he sneaked up behind the keeper, stole the ball and scored .. Kevin Hill who is currently manager and even occasionally plays when injuries mount up.
Q) What are your hopes for the club in the future?
I hope that the club doesn’t change.. it’s welcoming and family friendly . I would like somebody to come along put a substantial bit of finance into the team so they are confident about survival if/when promoted. Also to put financial backing into the club for its survival in uncertain times. They are a fantastic club and it would be nice for a few more locals to go through the turnstiles regularly to help bolster the coffers .
Future plans as told by Martin Young
Stadium – Stadium wise we are looking at improvements to make sure we meet the requirements for Step 3 football . This work is completed with support from the supporters club .
Academy – We currently do not have an academy .
Recruitment – Our joint managers, Kev Hill and Dave Pearse are left in charge of recruitment and the board aim to provide them with a competitive budget to consolidate the club at Step 4 and ultimately push up into Step 3.
Community – The supporters club organise a collection for Remembrance Sunday in conjunction with our local RBL .Our clubhouse is hired out to various community groups and we also recently made a food donation to the local food bank .
