Welcome back everyone to another Through the Turnstile meets!
We are back with another drummer and one that has led the line with his fanbase ever since he was given the drumsticks one day. A self-proclaimed 'character' Luke is not afraid to make some noise and get the crowd going, lets find out some more about how he goes about his role and what it is that he enjoys so much about being the Nomad drummer!
Name – Luke Sterland
Age – 35
Favourite team – Anstey Nomads
Occupation – Team Leader
Thing I love about football – The buzz of a 3pm Saturday game
My football pet hate – A boring 0-0 draw
Growing up, what first got you into football and supporting your local team?
My uncle got me my 1st season ticket at Leicester, seen what i needed to see the PL 2016, the fa cup 2021. Then a friend the coach at Anstey Brom said come down for a game and I’ve never looked back.
How you remember your first ever match as a kid — and did you already know you’d end up being that guy with the drum one day?
1st match as a kid was a lcfc 2-0 win over Southampton and no never did I dream I’d become the Nomads drummer at that age, non league football wasn’t on my radar.
How did you get into drumming in the first place, and when did it cross over into matchdays?
Brom the coach had the drum from a previous game and it had been shoved in a room at Anstey for months then one night we were playing Quorn in a Leicestershire Derby game both up the respected end of the table and Brom was like got you a present fancy being a knobhead tonight I don’t need permission to be a knobhead. I already am.

How do you balance drumming with actually watching the game — do you ever miss a goal because you’re mid-beat?
My main focus is the game. I’ve missed quite a lot of games due to banging the drum as I’ve been doing it maybe an offside or two or something like that never goal
What’s your go-to drum rhythm for a big moment, and do you believe it genuinely helps the team play better?
Not really got a go to song. Maybe the classic 'Nomads' after I bang it a few times, that’s about it.

If you could choose any song to be your club’s anthem, what would it be and why?
Got to be American pie by Don McLean its one of my karaoke songs and a sing it every New Year’s Eve it’s a tradition
How did you become the drummer for the club — was it planned or did you just turn up with sticks one day?
It wasn’t planned.
Brom said here is a present...try and put the opposition off and it’s stuck ever since.
What’s the most memorable match you’ve ever drummed at (for better or worse)?
Hartlepool away this year in the FA trophy we took the drum we had a good day up there we won the game into the next round brilliant match loved it to bits
On the drums, had any strange requests?
We’ve had a few players coming bang the drum after they scored, in the earlier days it was one of my favourite things.
I used to do then to do no stranger request of anyone really I think the fans love it as well. We’ve got a bit of the singing section behind is now which is all good really the club is moving in the right direction.
I know also Tony the chairman loves it all he ever wanted was singing section and now here we are.

How would you explain the atmosphere of non-league football to someone who’s only watched the Premier League?
It’s a community feel down a non league game and where else do you get to speak to the players after the game? Unless you have VIP day for a Premier League game? These lads do real jobs 9 to 5 and then play Saturday and Tuesday night kickball for 90 minutes with fans behind them. It’s a game of football at the end of the day is what we all like to do on a weekend or a Tuesday night.
What’s the funniest thing that’s ever happened to you while drumming at a game?
In the early days we were playing a team and their keeper. Who I totally dislike it went to penalties a couple of girls come up and asked if they could bang the drum and then the one drum stick got robbed luckily we got it back and we ended up winning the game on penalties.
Have you ever played a beat that accidentally distracted your own team?
I can’t say I have I’ve been told to tone down the swearing by ex keeper Conrad Logan who is now manager who we had a load of kids with isn’t that’s a fair point

If you could challenge any club’s fans to a drum-off, who would it be and why?
No, I’m the original drummer. People need to ask me for a drum off
If you wasn’t a drummer what would you think of them…?
I think they’re doing a great job.
I will be retiring my post and a young Johan Bromyard will be taking over. He’s got his own little drum at the minute. He’s the one I’m keeping the seat warm when’s he’s old enough and his mum and dad allow him to do it, it’s written in the stars, after all, his Dad Brom is the coach and the one who 1st gave me the drum.
Up the nomads.
I know drummers are the marmite of football but if you can forget about that for a moment, you cannot help but admire the level of commitment in which Luke shows week in and week out for his team.
Keep up the great work Luke.
Until next time!
